Story

Synopsis

On the day before her birthday, unconfident middle school student Akane is sent by her mother to pick up a gift from her eccentric aunt Chi's antique shop. While browsing curios, Akane presses her hand into a mysterious stone basin in the basement, accidentally summoning Hippocrates, an aristocratic alchemist, and his tiny fairy apprentice Pipo. The visitors hail Akane as the legendary Goddess of the Green Wind, whisking her and aunt Chi away into Wonderland, a whimsical parallel kingdom facing environmental ruin. To save the colorful realm from drought, Akane must overcome self-doubt and restore the seasonal drop.

⚠ Background — may contain spoilers

Studio Signal.MD produced this imaginative 115-minute fantasy adventure feature film, released theatrically across Japan by Warner Bros. Japan in April 2019. Directed by Keiichi Hara, the celebrated director of *Miss Hokusai* and *Colorful*, the movie adapted Sachiko Kashiwaba's beloved 1981 children's fantasy novel *Chikashitsu kara no Fushigi na Tabi*. Russian illustrator Ilya Kuvshinov served as lead character designer and visual conceptual artist, bringing a distinctive modern pop aesthetic to the production. The film screened in competition at the prestigious Annecy International Animation Film Festival, receiving praise for its vibrant color palette.

THEM Anime Reviews

Allen Moody 2019

The Wiki article mentions some critics giving this three out of five stars. While I couldn't quite go five here (because I felt it fell into cliché late in the proceedings), I certainly thought it was better than average. As I said, I kind of thought that other critics were labeling things as faults that I myself found to be virtues.

Allan Hunter Jun 13, 2019 Scored from the review text

The Wonderland is an eye-catching visual feast of contrasts, but its meandering, overly complicated plot undermines the film’s emotional impact.
