Synopsis
Jiro Horikoshi dreams of building beautiful aircraft, and grows up to design the Mitsubishi Zero, a machine of genuine elegance built for the purpose of killing people. The film follows his career across earthquake, illness, and a country moving steadily toward catastrophe, alongside his relationship with Naoko, whose tuberculosis gives their time together a hard limit. It never resolves the tension between the purity of his ambition and what his work was actually used for, treating that irreconcilability as the point. Every design he perfects moves closer to something he cannot control the use of.

Written and directed by Hayao Miyazaki, The Wind Rises was announced as his final film before he later returned to production, and it stands as his most personal and most controversial work. Its sympathetic treatment of an engineer who designed wartime aircraft drew criticism from multiple directions, both for insufficient political condemnation and for its pacifist framing. The film earned an Academy Award nomination and is widely read as Miyazaki's meditation on his own career spent making beautiful things about machines of destruction. Its refusal to resolve that contradiction is precisely what makes the film so unsettling.
