Barefoot Gen is a powerful film and, while I do have some complaints about it, it remains a film that deserves to be watched by not just fans of animation but those who are interested in World War II and the impact that the dropping of the atomic bomb had.

A young boy survives the atomic horrors of Hiroshima.
Synopsis
In the summer of 1945, six-year-old Gen Nakaoka lives in Hiroshima alongside his impoverished family, enduring severe food rationing and anti-war accusations leveled against his outspoken pacifist father. Despite gnawing hunger, Gen and his younger brother Shinji maintain infectious high spirits, caring for their pregnant mother Kimie. On the bright morning of August 6, an American B-29 bomber drops the world's first atomic weapon over the city center. In an instantaneous blinding flash, Gen's neighborhood is transformed into an inferno of vaporized bodies, melting buildings, and unimaginable human devastation, leaving Gen to rescue his surviving family.

In short, Barefoot Gen, while not terrible, disappoints many of the exact places it shouldn't. A lot of times it comes painfully close to what it should be, but there are still too many flaws to consider this a true classic.
