Synopsis
Hajime Kindaichi appears to be a lazy, unmotivated high school student with mediocre academic grades, but he secretly possesses an extraordinary genius intellect inherited from his famous detective grandfather, Kosuke Kindaichi. Accompanied by his loyal childhood friend Miyuki Nanase and veteran police inspector Isamu Kenmochi, Hajime frequently finds himself entangled in elaborate, gruesome murder mysteries, often involving locked rooms, cryptic puzzles, and vengeful serial killers. Swearing on his grandfather's proud name, Hajime methodically untangles psychological motivations and exposes intricate criminal tricks, revealing truths behind cases that baffle the authorities.
Background (may contain spoilers)
Produced by Toei Animation and directed by Daisuke Nishio, *Kindaichi Shounen no Jikenbo* adapts the seminal detective mystery manga written by Yozaburo Kanari and Seimaru Amagi with illustrations by Fumiya Sato. Airing on Nippon Television and Yomiuri TV from April 1997 to September 2000 for 148 episodes, the series played a foundational role in popularizing grim, intellectual mystery anime in Japan. The anime stayed faithful to the darker tone and complex misdirection of the original cases, earning strong domestic ratings and establishing a long-standing media franchise including subsequent television specials and films.
