Synopsis

High school student Ayato Kamina lives in Tokyo, believing that outside civilization was obliterated by war years ago. However, his reality shatters when military jets bombard the city, exposing that Tokyo has been isolated inside a temporal barrier created by the Mu, an interdimensional alien race. Rescued by intelligence operative Haruka Shitow, Ayato discovers his true destiny as the Instrumentalist of RahXephon, an ancient winged biomechanical deity that responds to his singing voice. Escaping to the outside world, Ayato battles Mulian invaders while untangling cosmic secrets about human memory and lost love.

⚠ Background — may contain spoilers
Broadcast twenty-six episodes on Fuji TV from January to September 2002, *RahXephon* was produced by studio Bones and directed by veteran mecha designer Yutaka Izubuchi in his directorial debut. Noted for its artistic motifs drawn from pre-Columbian Mesoamerican mythology, classical opera, and psychological introspection, the anime was widely praised for its rich, philosophical storytelling. Featuring sweeping, emotionally resonant orchestral music composed by Yoko Kanno, the series remains one of Bones most celebrated original science fiction achievements.
