Story

Synopsis

In the spring of 1999, astronomers at the Tokyo Observatory discover that the wandering tenth planet, La-Metal, is charting a cataclysmic collision trajectory toward Earth. Yayoi Yukino, an unassuming schoolteacher and observatory assistant, harbors an extraordinary secret: she is Queen Millennia, dispatched from La-Metal a millennium ago to guide human development. Ordered by her icy imperial homeworld to prepare Earth for subjugation and harvest human bodies, Yayoi rebels against her tyrannical empress out of genuine maternal love for mankind. Alongside student Hajime Amamori, Yayoi fights celestial invaders to save Earth.

⚠ Background — may contain spoilers
Released theatrically in March 1982 by Toei Animation and directed by Masayuki Akehi, this lavish space opera adapts the grand science fiction manga by Leiji Matsumoto. Co-existing in the shared Leijiverse alongside *Galaxy Express 999* and *Space Pirate Captain Harlock*, the film features sweeping planetary devastation and melancholy romantic tragedy. Renowned synthesized music pioneer Kitaro composed the ethereal electronic score, with pop icon Dara Sedaka performing the haunting theme song *Angel Queen*, establishing the movie as an audiovisual sci-fi benchmark.
