Story

Synopsis

Three years after the catastrophic downfall of Gargoyle and the apocalyptic Neo-Atlantis syndicate, peaceful life returns to post-industrial Europe. Young inventor Jean Roque Raltique pursues aeronautical research, while Nadia pursues journalism in London. Global harmony is disrupted when an international syndicate led by tyrannical industrialist Geiger kidnaps world political leaders, replacing them with robotic android doubles to instigate worldwide military warfare. Reunited by historical duty, Jean, Nadia, and their eccentric comrades aboard the high-tech battleship Nautilus must dismantle Geiger automated orbital installations before global civilization collapses into self-inflicted warfare.

⚠ Background — may contain spoilers
Released in June 1991, this theatrical sequel to the groundbreaking 1990 Gainax television series was co-produced by Group TAC and directed by Sho Aono following creative departures from original director Hideaki Anno. Combining historical Jules Verne steampunk aesthetics with original sci-fi action, the film incorporates newly animated footage alongside extensive television series flashbacks. Despite receiving mixed reactions regarding its condensed pacing compared to the seminal television masterpiece, the film provides a nostalgic encore for beloved characters Nadia, Jean, and Captain Nemo.
