Synopsis

Admission to the prestigious interstellar Cosmo Academy requires surviving a grueling fifty-three-day endurance examination aboard the Esperanza, an abandoned orbital spacecraft. Candidate Tada, a gifted psychic Terran youth, enters the airlock alongside nine other candidates from diverse planetary civilizations. However, when the cadets conduct their initial headcount, they discover eleven people aboard the vessel. As life-support systems mysteriously fail and orbital decay threatens imminent incineration, panic erupts over the identity of the suspected saboteur. Tada must overcome deep-seated racial prejudice and unite the fractured crew to survive the psychological pressure cooker.

⚠ Background — may contain spoilers
Directed by Satoshi Dezaki and Tsuneo Tominaga at Magic Bus in 1986, this sci-fi mystery classic adapts the landmark shojo manga by Moto Hagio, a founding member of the revolutionary Year 24 Group. Combining psychological suspense, locked-room whodunit mechanics, and poignant themes of gender identity and intercultural prejudice, the film is revered as one of the finest classic sci-fi anime ever made. Its sophisticated pacing and empathetic character writing set enduring benchmarks for intellectual science fiction.
