Biography
Akitaro Daichi was born in Gunma Prefecture and trained in photography before entering the anime industry [1][2]. He began as a cameraman at Tokyo Animation Film, working on Future Boy Conan, before a stint outside animation producing karaoke videos [1][2]. He returned to anime and studied under director Tetsuo Yasumi, rising through production management before storyboarding the acclaimed comedy Akazukin Chacha in 1994 [2] and making his series-director debut the following year on Nurse Angel Ririka SOS [1]. He is best known for directing the fast-paced, visually dense comedy Kodocha (1996-1998), the beloved 2001 adaptation of Fruits Basket, the Jubei-chan franchise, and Kamisama Kiss (2012-2015) [1]. His long-running Ojaru-maru, which he has directed since 1998, is considered his signature work [2]. Daichi is known within the industry for a distinctive comedic style built on rapid pacing, heavy use of visual deformation, and on-screen text and wipes for comic timing [2].
