Story

Synopsis

Subaru Mikazuki is a socially anxious mystery author who intensely dislikes human interaction, preferring to isolate himself inside his study surrounded by towering bookshelves. While visiting his deceased parents' grave, Subaru encounters a scruffy, starving stray kitten and impulsively decides to take her home as inspiration for his next novel. Naming the feisty feline Haru, the reclusive writer's solitary existence is thoroughly upended by litter boxes, vet visits, and feeding schedules. Told through dual perspectives alternating between human and feline viewpoints, their gentle cohabitation teaches both vulnerable souls how to love, trust, and heal from grief.

⚠ Background — may contain spoilers
Studio Zero-G animated this heartwarming twelve-episode slice-of-life comedy, which aired in winter 2019. Directed by Kaoru Suzuki and written by Deko Akao, the anime adapts Minatsuki and As Futatsuya's beloved manga. The production's defining storytelling device was splitting each episode into two distinct halves: first presenting events from Subaru's anxious human perspective, then replaying the same situations from Haru's pragmatic cat perspective. The series garnered widespread praise for its accurate, endearing feline behavioral observations and its sensitive, emotionally resonant depiction of overcoming social anxiety, bereavement, and post-traumatic loneliness.
