Synopsis

Miyamoto Musashi stands as one of the most celebrated figures in Japanese history, renowned worldwide as an invincible duelist who mastered the unique two-sword Niten Ichi-ryu technique. Yet across centuries of theatrical dramatization and folklore, historical facts have blurred with myth. Through the inquisitive analytical narration of modern researcher Kiichi Inukai, this documentary-style anime reexamines the legendary swordsman's turbulent life. Tracing Musashi's humble origins at the Battle of Sekigahara, his famous duel on Ganryu Island, and his philosophical authorship of *The Book of Five Rings*, the narrative unveils the calculating military tactician behind the legend.

⚠ Background — may contain spoilers
Production I.G produced this innovative seventy-two-minute historical anime feature, which opened in Japanese cinemas in June 2009. Directed by Mizuho Nishikubo with an original story and conceptual design written by visionary auteur Mamoru Oshii, famous for *Ghost in the Shell*, the film presented a groundbreaking blend of scholarly historiography, kinetic 2D action, and playful caricature. Oshii deconstructed romanticized samurai folklore through irreverent comedic presentations paired with painstakingly accurate period combat. The project earned critical recognition at international film festivals for its intellectual depth and audacious hybrid documentary format.
