Synopsis

A notoriously miserly man in historic Tokyo refuses to waste anything, habitually swallowing whole cherries along with their pits to avoid discarding scraps. Soon afterward, an incredible sprout emerges from the crown of his skull, rapidly blossoming into an enormous, vibrant cherry tree. Flocks of boisterous holiday revelers, musicians, and picnickers gather on his head to drink, sing, and celebrate spring, driving the stingy man into hysterical madness. In exasperation, he violently yanks the tree out by its roots, leaving a deep crater that fills with rainwater and triggers an even more surreal fate.

⚠ Background — may contain spoilers
Created, written, and animated entirely by independent Japanese master Koji Yamamura in 2002, this ten-minute masterpiece adapts the classical Rakugo comedic storytelling monologue *Atama-yama*. Narrated by traditional storyteller Takeharu Kunimoto accompanied by shamisen rhythm, the film utilizes distorted line work, earthy watercolors, and grotesque caricature. The short achieved historic international acclaim, winning the Grand Prix at the Annecy International Animated Film Festival and earning an Academy Award nomination for Best Animated Short Film in 2003.
