Story

Synopsis

In a surreal, hypnotic fantasy realm, small kitten Nyatta nearly drowns in a family bathtub, catching a fleeting glimpse of death claiming the spirit of his gravely ill older sister, Nyako. Rushing after the specter, Nyatta manages to retrieve half of his sister soul, leaving her in a catatonic, semi-conscious state. Determined to restore her full spirit, the two anthropomorphic kittens embark on a bizarre metaphysical journey across melting deserts, shifting oceans, and eccentric carnivals. Confronting strange deities and surreal perils, Nyatta seeks the magical four-leaf flower to revive his sister.

⚠ Background — may contain spoilers
Released as a thirty-two-minute theatrical short in 2001, *Cat Soup* was produced by studio J.C.Staff, directed by Tatsuo Sato, and visual-conceptualized by Masaaki Yuasa. Adapting the dark, experimental manga created by underground artist Nekojiru, the wordless film combines eerie nursery rhyme aesthetics with avant-garde animation techniques. Winning the Excellence Prize at the Japan Media Arts Festival, the short remains celebrated worldwide as a striking masterclass in dream logic and visual metaphor.
