Story
Synopsis
In a futuristic society where synthetic humanoids called Neans perform hazardous labor under strict human subjugation, political tensions ignite on planetary colonies across Mars. Rogue mechanical entities known as the Immortal Nine launch secretive uprisings against the galactic government, threatening to plunge society into civil war. To eliminate these conspirators, synthetic operative Rouge Redstar and her human handler Naomi Orthmann travel across bustling Martian cities. Transforming into the armored battle gladiator Metal Rouge, Rouge wages brutal battles while wrestling with her own emerging desires for personal liberty and genuine autonomy.
⚠ Background — may contain spoilers
Created to commemorate animation studio Bones' twenty-fifth anniversary, *Metallic Rouge* debuted in January 2024 as an original science fiction superhero television series. Directed by Motonobu Hori with story supervision by legendary mecha designer Yutaka Izubuchi, the production showcases classic tokusatsu sensibilities through slick cyberpunk aesthetics, vibrant color palettes, and polished mechanical battles. The anime pays deliberate homage to retro sci-fi classics like Blade Runner and Bubblegum Crisis while exploring contemporary ethical debates surrounding artificial intelligence, bodily autonomy, and colonial exploitation.
