Synopsis

This film retells the original Super Dimension Fortress Macross story in condensed form, following Hikaru Ichijyo caught between civilian singer Lynn Minmay and officer Misa Hayase while humanity faces the Zentradi, a race of giant alien warriors who have never encountered culture in any form. The Zentradi's inability to process music turns out to be a strategic vulnerability, and the film commits entirely to the premise that a pop song can genuinely function as a decisive weapon of war. Every battle is fought over whether culture itself constitutes a weapon.

⚠ Background — may contain spoilers
Directed by Noboru Ishiguro and Shoji Kawamori, Do You Remember Love was enormously influential on Japanese animation, notable for theatrical-quality mechanical animation that far exceeded television standards of its era. Its combination of transforming fighters, idol music, and a love triangle established the template the entire Macross franchise would follow for decades. The film is frequently cited as one of the finest anime features of the 1980s, and its title song remains one of the most recognizable pieces of music in the medium. Its animation quality set a standard that television production could not approach.
