Synopsis
In the year 2008, a devastating global war rages between the Unified Earth Government and rogue anti-unification factions following the mysterious crash of an alien warship. Young pilot Shin Kudo is shot down during a dogfight over the South Pacific by an enemy transformed fighter jet. Waking up on the secluded, technologically untouched Mayan Island, Shin is nursed back to health by the island priestess Sara Nome and her spirited sister Mao. When armed forces invade the sanctuary to extract ancient alien extraterrestrial artifacts, Shin pilots the experimental variable fighter VF-0 Phoenix to protect his newfound haven.

Satelight animated this celebrated five-part original video animation series released between 2002 and 2004 to commemorate the twentieth anniversary of the iconic *Macross* franchise. Franchise creator Shoji Kawamori directed the project, which served as a canonical prequel set one year prior to the events of the original 1982 television series. The OVA marked a pioneering technical milestone for the studio by combining fluid hand-drawn character art with advanced 3D computer graphics for dogfight choreography. It introduced the ancestry of the Nome lineage, establishing vital lore foundations that later became central to 2008's *Macross Frontier*.
