Story

Synopsis

The bustling streets of modern Tokyo coexist with an invisible spiritual realm populated by youkai, supernatural creatures that have lived alongside humans for centuries. Maintaining balance between these two worlds is the duty of the Karas, armored spiritual guardians appointed by the enigmatic maiden Yurine. When a disillusioned former Karas named Eko decides to harvest humanity's soul energy to subjugate the living, chaos erupts across the metropolis. A newly chosen guardian, the mortal youth Otoha, must master the mystical armor of the Karas and wage brutal aerial combat against mechanical demons to save the city.

⚠ Background — may contain spoilers
Tatsunoko Production produced this celebrated six-part original video animation series between 2005 and 2007 to commemorate the studio's fortieth anniversary. Directed by Keiichi Sato, with creature designs by Kenji Andou, the production pushed contemporary digital boundaries by seamlessly blending hand-drawn 2D character animation with cutting-edge 3D CGI mecha choreography. The OVA earned the Best Original Video award at the 2006 Tokyo Anime Awards. Praised for its dark urban atmosphere, kinetic combat sequences, and orchestral score by Yoshihiro Ike, the project remains an influential landmark in mid-2000s anime cinematography.
