Story
Synopsis
In fourteenth-century feudal Japan, a blind biwa priest named Tomona and a severely disfigured outcast dancer named Inu-Oh cross paths on the outskirts of Kyoto. Born with twisted limbs and hidden behind a wooden gourd mask, Inu-Oh discovers that dancing to Tomona's revolutionary, fast-paced biwa riffs causes parts of his cursed anatomy to transform into graceful human limbs. Together, the two artistic rebels form a musical troupe that plays electric, modern-sounding rock operas recounting the forgotten tales of slaughtered Heike warriors, captivating massive commoner audiences and shocking the conservative shogunate elite.

Inu-Oh performs his final, magnificent rock opera before the shogun Ashikaga Yoshimitsu, transforming his remaining malformed arm into a beautiful human body. Threatened by their subversive cultural popularity and political influence, the shogunate outlaws the Heike ballads and demands complete stylistic conformity. When Tomona refuses to renounce his original artistic identity, government soldiers execute him by decapitation on the riverbanks. Inu-Oh complies to survive, but his original songs vanish from history. Centuries later, Tomona's wandering spirit encounters Inu-Oh's soul in modern Tokyo, where both artists reunite and finally play their timeless music freely.
