Synopsis

On a quiet, idyllic cobblestone street corner, an enchanting miniature society thrives: a sweet girl and her teddy bear, an inquisitive mouse, an antique street lamp, and sentient advertisements on a brick wall. On the posters, a passionate violinist and an elegant pianist fall in love, communicating through melodious musical notes. Their serene world is suddenly shattered when tyrannical totalitarian authorities march through the streets, plastering aggressive military propaganda over the art and demanding wartime conformity. Despite violent bombardment and oppression, the spirit of romance and artistic freedom endures through miraculous renewal.

⚠ Background — may contain spoilers
Directed by Eiichi Yamamoto and Yusaku Sakamoto under the direct supervision of Osamu Tezuka, this groundbreaking 1962 thirty-nine minute theatrical short was the inaugural production of Mushi Production. Free of spoken dialogue, the film conveys profound emotional depth entirely through pantomime, expressive character design, and a sweeping classical orchestral score by Tatsuo Takai. Winning the Ofuji Noburo Award at the Mainichi Film Awards and the Blue Ribbon Award, this anti-war fairy tale established Tezuka studio as a revolutionary powerhouse in Japanese animation.
