Synopsis

An alien band is abducted from their home planet, disguised as humans, and forced to perform as a manufactured pop act on Earth by a producer harvesting musicians for his own purposes. A pilot who saw the abduction pursues them across space to mount a rescue. The entire film runs without dialogue, telling its story purely through animation set to the fourteen tracks of a single album, and the visual narrative is coherent enough to work as a film in its own right. Every track advances the plot, which is a remarkable structural achievement in itself.

⚠ Background — may contain spoilers
A collaboration between Daft Punk and Leiji Matsumoto, the creator of Space Battleship Yamato and Galaxy Express 999, Interstella5555 visualizes the entirety of the Discovery album as one continuous animated narrative. Matsumoto's distinctive character designs are unmistakable throughout. The project remains one of the most ambitious music and animation collaborations ever attempted, and it introduced a substantial number of Western electronic music fans to Matsumoto's work and to anime aesthetics more broadly. Its wordless narrative demonstrates how much story animation can carry without any dialogue at all, and the collaboration remains a landmark for both artists involved.
