In the aristocratic science-fiction year 5053, young French viscount Albert de Morcerf travels to the Moon to attend Luna's lavish carnival festivities. There, he is entranced by the Count of Monte Cristo, an enigmatic, unfathomably wealthy nobleman possessing alien blue skin. Unbeknownst to the naive Albert, the Count is actually Edmond Dantes, a former sailor who made a pact with the demonic entity Gankutsuou to seek merciless vengeance against the corrupt Parisian elites who falsely framed him decades ago. Using Albert as an unwitting pawn, the Count infiltrates Parisian high society to orchestrate their ruin.

Studio Gonzo animated this visionary twenty-four-episode science-fiction masterpiece, which broadcast between October 2004 and March 2005. Conceived and directed by auteur Mahiro Maeda, the production adapted Alexandre Dumas' classic nineteenth-century French novel *The Count of Monte Cristo*. The anime achieved legendary status for its revolutionary visual design, utilizing computer-rendered layered Photoshop textile patterns applied directly onto 2D character clothing and hair, creating an unforgettable kaleidoscope aesthetic inspired by Gustav Klimt. The anime won multiple international animation honors and stands as an enduring masterpiece of visual experimentation and operatic vengeance.

Whether the anime will eventually become a classic in the same vein as the book remains to be seen, but it's definitely a worthy candidate for the spot.
