Story

Synopsis

Haruka Nanase takes his lifelong devotion to freestyle swimming onto the international stage, traveling to Sydney, Australia to participate in the All-Japan Invitational and prepare for the upcoming World Aquatic Championships. Joined by his trusted childhood rivals Rin Matsuoka and Ikuya Kirishima, Haruka is pushed to examine what water truly means to his identity. As expectations from global trainers mount, Haruka encounters Albert Volandel, the undisputed Swedish world champion whose robotic perfection and overwhelming speed in the pool instill a terrifying sense of inadequacy in every competitor who dares challenge his dominance.

⚠ Background — may contain spoilers
Haruka becomes fixated on defeating Albert, abandoning his intuitive love for water to adopt a grueling, hyper-technical training regime that isolates him from Rin and Makoto. During the Sydney tournament finals, Haruka races directly against Albert and suffers a devastating psychological collapse, finishing far behind as Albert effortlessly shatters another world record. Paralyzed by the realization that pure talent alone cannot bridge the gap, Haruka pushes Rin away and wanders through the Sydney streets in complete despair, setting the stage for his teammates to mount an emotional intervention in the concluding chapter.
