Story
Synopsis
At a prestigious Manhattan auction, financial tycoon Jirokichi Suzuki purchases Vincent van Gogh's historic Sunflowers painting, thought destroyed during the World War II bombing of Ashiya, for a record-shattering three hundred million dollars. Suzuki plans to assemble all seven surviving variations of Van Gogh's Sunflowers for a historic exhibition at the ultra-secure Lake Rock museum in Japan. The security operation is violently thrown into chaos when phantom thief Kaito Kid infiltrates the auction, announcing his intention to steal the artwork while employing uncharacteristically lethal explosive tactics that baffle both Conan Edogawa and the police.

Conan uncovers that the arson attacks and murder plots are not Kaito Kid's doing, but the work of painting appraiser Natsumi Miyadai, who believed two of the paintings were fraudulent copies that defiled Van Gogh's legacy. Miyadai detonates explosives inside the Lake Rock gallery, trapping Ran Mouri beneath falling stone debris as roaring flames consume the underground vault. Kaito Kid had intervened purely to safeguard the genuine masterpieces. Conan and Kid combine their talents to rescue Ran and retrieve the paintings, with Kid utilizing his hang glider to carry the final canvas to safety before the museum floods.
