Black Lagoon
BLACK LAGOON · 2006
A kidnapped Japanese businessman embraces ruthless underworld mercenary smuggling in Thailand.
Synopsis
Rokuro Okajima is a mild-mannered, unappreciated Japanese white-collar salaryman carrying a confidential disk on a Southeast Asian business trip. When he is kidnapped by the Lagoon Company, a mercenary PT boat crew operating out of the criminal haven of Roanapur, Thailand, Rokuro's corporate executives abandon him to die. Deciding to discard his boring corporate past, Rokuro rechristens himself Rock and joins the mercenary outfit alongside charismatic leader Dutch, mechanic Benny, and lethal gunslinger Revy Two-Hands. Immersed in a cutthroat underworld of Russian mobsters, cartel killers, and CIA conspiracies, Rock struggles to preserve his moral humanity.
Background (may contain spoilers)
Produced by studio Madhouse and directed by Sunao Katabuchi, *Black Lagoon* adapts the popular crime action manga created by Rei Hiroe, serialized in Monthly Sunday GX. Premiering in spring 2006 for 12 episodes, the anime was lauded for its cinematic gunfights, gritty international underworld atmosphere, and philosophical exploration of morality and trauma. Katabuchi's precise pacing and kinetic action direction, complemented by Daisuke Katayama's rock-infused musical score, elevated the series into a definitive modern action anime. The show achieved widespread popularity globally, establishing Revy and Rock as iconic characters in 2000s anime.

Read full review ↗“The production values for this series are very high, and even one of the few moments it looks bad is also one of the series' funniest jokes. Unsurprisingly, the American dub for this is very strong, and Meryke Hendriske's take on Revy far outstrips veteran seiyuu Megumi Toyoguchi performance.”
