Synopsis
Known throughout the criminal underworld as Number XIII and feared as Black Cat, cold-blooded assassin Train Heartnet carries out fatal executions for the elite syndicate Chronos. However, after befriending a cheerful independent bounty hunter named Saya Minatsuki, Train experiences genuine warmth and abandons his murderous profession to become a stray sweeper. Furious at his defection, his obsessive former partner Creed Diskenth orchestrates tragic violence to drag Train back into darkness. Armed with his ornate revolver Hades, Train embarks on dangerous bounty hunts alongside cynical partner Sven Vollfied, defending innocent lives without ever killing again.
Background (may contain spoilers)
Produced by studio Gonzo and directed by Shin Itagaki, the 2005 anime series *Black Cat* adapts Kentaro Yabuki popular Shonen Jump manga. Spanning twenty-four broadcast episodes, the series balanced stylized gun-slinging action with breezy noir comedy and supernatural tao powers. Featuring music composed by Taku Iwasaki, the production remains a beloved mid-2000s shonen classic, fondly remembered for its snappy combat choreography, charismatic rogue protagonist, and dynamic western-inspired aesthetic across worldwide anime fandom.

“Another Gonzo release. Action and comedy mix well, but is it worth your time?”

“It's a bad sign when the concept is stale and the title character is the least interesting one in the show, but a strong supporting cast, quirky sense of humor, and quality English dub make up for deficiencies elsewhere.”
