Synopsis
Following the tragic drowning of her mother during her childhood, seventeen-year-old high school student Suzu Naito lives as a quiet, traumatized recluse in a rural Kochi village, unable to sing without hyperventilating. Seeking an escape from her grief, Suzu joins U, a revolutionary virtual reality network boasting five billion users. Manifesting as Belle, a stunning pink-haired avatar with face freckles, Suzu miraculously discovers she can sing again, becoming an overnight global pop phenomenon. However, her massive virtual concerts are abruptly interrupted by the Dragon, a fearsome, bruised beast terrorizing U's users.

Suzu discovers that the Dragon is in reality an abused fourteen-year-old boy named Kei, who uses U to project anger and protect his younger brother Tomo from their violent father. When self-righteous virtual vigilantes led by Justice unveil Belle's secret castle, Suzu makes the ultimate sacrifice: she voluntarily removes Belle's digital mask, singing in her real freckled appearance before five billion spectators. Gaining Kei's trust, Suzu travels alone to Tokyo, standing between the abusive father and his sons until the man flees. Suzu returns home, singing joyfully with her father.
