Story

Synopsis

Inside an enigmatic, solitary stone castle draped in eternal gloom, a gentle dark creature named Deemo spends eternity playing soothing melodies on a grand piano. One quiet afternoon, an amnesiac young girl named Alice mysteriously plummets through a skylight ceiling, unable to remember her home or identity. Compassionate Deemo welcomes the lost child, discovering that whenever piano music resonates through the corridors, a magical sapling emerges and grows toward the heavens. Playing together, Deemo and Alice nurture the colossal tree toward the celestial opening, unaware of the bittersweet personal revelation waiting at its peak.

⚠ Background — may contain spoilers
Production I.G and Signal.MD produced this emotional computer-animated musical fantasy film, released across Japanese theaters in February 2022. Directed by Shuhei Matsushita and executive directed by Junichi Fujisaku, the project adapted the wildly successful mobile rhythm game *DEEMO* developed by Taiwanese studio Rayark. Renowned anime composer Yuki Kajiura composed the sweeping theatrical theme song *Nocturne*, performed by teenage vocalist Hinano Takano. The production combined stylized 3D cel-shading with emotive musical arrangements, offering gaming enthusiasts and theatergoers a touching allegorical meditation on grief, acceptance, and the healing power of melody.
