Story

Synopsis

For ten long years, Rentt Faina has toiled away as a humble bronze-rank adventurer in the frontier town of Maalt, hunting weak goblins and mentoring rookies despite possessing negligible magical talent. While mapping an undiscovered labyrinth chamber in the Water Moon Dungeon, he encounters a legendary dragon and is promptly devoured alive. Instead of perishing, Rentt awakens as a conscious, sentient skeletal monstrosity. Drawing on his extensive monster biology knowledge, he harnesses Existential Evolution, consuming fallen dungeon beasts to progress from a frail skeleton to a ghoul. Hiding his grotesque appearance, Rentt strives to regain human form.

⚠ Background — may contain spoilers
Based on Yu Okano's dark fantasy light novel series illustrated by Jaian, this television anime was animated by studio Connect and directed by Noriaki Akitaya. Airing twelve episodes in winter 2024, the production was praised for its methodical pacing, grounded dungeon crawling mechanics, and thoughtful worldbuilding. Voice actor Ryouta Oosaka delivered a compelling performance as the introspective undead protagonist, earning positive reception from tabletop RPG fans and fantasy readers across global streaming platforms.
