Synopsis

Set atop a scenic hilltop in pre-war Japan, a dedicated photographer operates a modest portrait studio, capturing the milestones of local villagers across decades. One day, a young couple brings their infant daughter into the studio for her commemorative portrait. Despite the photographer's whimsical props, funny faces, and playful antics, the stern baby girl obstinately refuses to smile. Undeterred, the photographer makes it his lifelong artistic ambition to coax a genuine smile from her as she returns throughout the changing eras of the twentieth century, marking the passage of history through silence.

⚠ Background — may contain spoilers
The silent short tracks the woman returning to the hillside studio as a rebellious schoolgirl, a mature wartime bride, and eventually an elderly widow carrying her newborn grandchild. Throughout every tragic and joyful chapter of the twentieth century, including post-war reconstruction, the photographer documents her dignified countenance. Only in their final portrait session, when the woman holds her grandchild before the elderly photographer's lens, does she finally break into a radiant, warm smile. The photographer snaps the photograph, achieving his life's artistic fulfillment just before the studio peacefully closes.
