Synopsis
Returning home to Spanish colonial California after studying in Europe, young aristocrat Don Diego de la Vega finds his homeland crushed beneath the tyrannical oppression of corrupt military commander Raymond and Lieutenant Gabriel. To combat their unchecked cruelty without endangering his family, Diego deliberately feigns cowardice, clumsiness, and foolish vanity in public. Under the cover of night, he dons a black cape and mask to become the legendary outlaw swordsman Zorro. Accompanied by his plucky mute sidekick Bernardo, Diego defends oppressed townsfolk, duels corrupt garrisons, and protects justice.
Background (may contain spoilers)
Produced by Ashi Productions in collaboration with Italian broadcaster Mondo TV, *The Magnificent Zorro* is a 1996 anime television series directed by Katsumi Minoguchi. Spanning fifty-two episodes, the international co-production adapted Johnston McCulley's classic western hero with kinetic anime action and swashbuckling adventure sensibilities. While its Japanese broadcast was delayed, the series achieved immense commercial success across Europe and Latin America, becoming a cherished childhood staple for international audiences during the late nineties.
