Story
Synopsis
In January 1999, magus Touko Aozaki dispatches mystical investigator Shiki Ryougi to the prestigious Reien Academy, an all-girls Catholic boarding school. Shiki is tasked with protecting Mikiya Kokutou's younger sister, Azaka Kokutou, an apprentice magus attending the academy, while investigating a bizarre epidemic of altered memories and student suicides. Guided by fairy-like illusions that steal past recollections, the investigation leads Shiki and Azaka into the school chapel, where a rogue magus teacher named Satsuki Kurogiri conducts forbidden thaumaturgical research into the divine language of fairies to rewrite human reality.

Satsuki Kurogiri reveals he was manipulated by the mastermind Souren Araya, using fairy language to rewrite student Ousawa's memories and induce suicidal guilt over a peer's death. When Kurogiri summons memory-eating fairy familiars, Azaka ignites them using her innate ignition magecraft. Shiki corners Kurogiri, using her Mystic Eyes of Death Perception to sever his magical binding spell and slash his thaumaturgical voice box without killing him. Disarmed of his spellcasting power, Kurogiri departs the academy, while Azaka accepts her ongoing rivalry with Shiki for Mikiya's affection.
