Synopsis
In the sweltering late summer of 1998, a chilling series of inexplicable suicides rocks the city as eight seemingly unrelated teenage high school girls leap to their deaths from the rooftop of the condemned Fujijo Building. When investigator Mikiya Kokutou falls into a comatose trance after witnessing ghostly apparitions floating above the skyscraper ruins, his employer, the puppet-maker and sorceress Touko Aozaki, dispatches Shiki Ryougi. Armed with a prosthetic arm and the Mystic Eyes of Death Perception, Shiki investigates the rooftop, confronting the floating astral projections of the suicidal girls.
⚠ Background — may contain spoilers
Shiki ascends the Fujijo Building to confront the bedridden psychic Kirie Fujijo, who possesses the supernatural power to project floating spiritual doubles. Kirie orchestrated the suicides not out of malice, but from a desperate, agonizing desire to experience flight and escape her terminal, paralyzed physical body. In a fierce rooftop supernatural clash, Shiki uses her Mystic Eyes to perceive and sever the conceptual lines of Kirie's astral projection, destroying her psychic double. Having tasted true flight before her spiritual demise, the bedridden Kirie rolls herself off the hospital roof to end her mortal suffering.
