Story

Synopsis

In the grim aftermath of the Last War, human physiology is biologically altered such that proximity to natural fire causes instantaneous spontaneous combustion. Civilization survives solely through the perilous efforts of Fire Hunters, brave trackers who venture into dark spirit-infested forests to harvest the fiery bodily fluids of monstrous Flame Spirits. When eleven-year-old village girl Touko is rescued by a dying hunter, she undertakes a long pilgrimage to the imperial capital to return his hunting dog and sickle. Concurrently, capital orphan Koushi investigates forbidden alchemical technologies, bringing their distant fates together against imperial religious deceit.

Based on the acclaimed fantasy novel series by Rieko Hinata with illustrations by Akihiro Yamada, *The Fire Hunter* was animated by Signal.MD. Directed by celebrated animation visionary Junji Nishimura with scripts supervised by Mamoru Oshii, the ten-episode series premiered on premium satellite network WOWOW in January 2023. Noted for its richly textured mythic worldbuilding, haunting acoustic score by Kenji Kawai, and traditional folk art aesthetic, the anime earned a second broadcast season in 2024.
