Synopsis

Trained from early childhood to become the supreme contract killer in the Japanese criminal underworld, the peerless assassin known only as the Fable can eliminate any target in six seconds flat. However, after a prolific string of high-profile hits attracts intense police heat, his mysterious boss orders him to relocate to Osaka and live peacefully as an ordinary citizen named Akira Sato for one full calendar year, under penalty of death if he kills anyone. Together with his eccentric driver and partner Yoko posing as his sister, Akira struggles to navigate mundane domestic employment and civilian social life.

Background (may contain spoilers)

Produced by Tezuka Productions and directed by Ryousuke Takahashi, *The Fable* adapts the hit seinen crime manga written and illustrated by Katsuhisa Minami, serialized in Weekly Young Magazine. Premiering on Nippon Television in spring 2024 for 25 continuous episodes, the television series faithfully captured the manga's dry deadpan humor, gritty underworld violence, and quirky character quirks. Renowned director Takahashi brought measured, realistic pacing to Akira's absurd struggle with normal life, contrasting hilarious attempts at drawing children's cartoons against tense, tactical non-lethal underworld combat encounters.
