Synopsis

Thirteen-year-old middle schooler Yasaka Hajime spends his summer vacation staying at his grandfather house in rural Japan. While visiting the quaint retro coffee shop Hakobune, he meets Sayoko Arashiyama, a poised, beautiful sixteen-year-old waitress. Astonishingly, Yasaka discovers that Sayoko is actually a ghost possessing the supernatural ability to travel backward through time when holding hands with a compatible partner. Transported into wartime Japan during the closing months of World War II, Hajime assists Sayoko in rescuing innocent civilians from tragic historical air raids, gradually uncovering her painful personal past.

Background (may contain spoilers)

Produced by Shaft and directed by Akiyuki Shinbo with series composition by Katsuhiko Takayama, the 2009 television series *Summer Storm!*, known in Japan as Natsu no Arashi!, adapts Jin Kobayashi manga. Spanning thirteen episodes, the anime is distinguished by Shinbo trademark avant-garde visual flourishes, retro Showa pop-culture parodies, and an unexpected emotional poignancy regarding historical wartime memory, spawning an immediate second season titled Akina Arashi and leaving a distinct impression on late-2000s anime comedy.

“A good show that could've been a great show if it wasn't for confusing storytelling. Still, it's definitely above-average.”
