Story
Synopsis
The boys' soft tennis club at Shimei Middle School is facing imminent disbandment by the student council unless they can win an official match. Desperate to turn their fortunes around, passionate team captain Toma Shinjo recruits Maki Katsuragi, an athletic, impoverished transfer student who refuses to join any club without financial compensation. Agreeing to pay Maki for his athletic participation, Toma pairs with him on the court, sparking a competitive renaissance across the team. However, beneath their practice matches, each boy quietly navigates severe domestic crises, including parental abuse, domestic violence, societal neglect, and fractured personal identities.
⚠ Background — may contain spoilers
Studio 8bit produced this original twelve-episode sports drama anime, which aired in fall 2019. The project was conceived, directed, and scripted by veteran auteur Kazuki Akane, celebrated for directing *The Vision of Escaflowne* and *Noein*. Departing sharply from conventional lighthearted sports tropes, the series received widespread recognition for its unvarnished, sensitive exploration of modern social issues, including domestic trauma, non-binary gender identity, and adolescent mental health. Supported by fluid, realistic soft-tennis choreography and an emotional ending dance animation, the series left a powerful emotional impression on international audiences.
