Synopsis
Following the retirement of the third-year leadership, second-year euphonium player Kumiko Oumae assumes the demanding presidency of the Kitauji High School Concert Band. With the prestigious regional ensemble contest approaching, the club faces a strict regulation permitting only a single small chamber group to represent the school at preliminaries. To maintain artistic fairness and avoid internal resentment, Kumiko establishes an all-club internal audition where student-formed chamber teams compete for the sole nomination. Balancing administrative obligations, musical rehearsals, and personal friendships, Kumiko forms a mixed octet while guiding her fellow musicians through rigorous preparations.
⚠ Background — may contain spoilers
Tensions rise across the band room as numerous contrasting brass and woodwind ensembles polish their competition repertoires. Kumiko rehearses alongside Kousaka, Midori, and peer musicians, offering diplomatic encouragement to anxious underclassmen facing stage fright. During the judged internal showcase, the woodwind quintet featuring percussionist Tsubame Kamaya and tubist Hazuki delivers an exceptionally cohesive and emotionally resonant performance, securing the single coveted qualification ticket to the prefectural contest. Celebrating the quintet's victory without personal bitterness, Kumiko finds confidence in her executive leadership as Kitauji band members unite to pursue their national championship dream.
