Ordinary high school student Yuuji Sakai believes his life is utterly normal until time suddenly freezes around him, trapping the city in a crimson barrier. Monstrous entities called Crimson Denizens appear, devouring the souls of paralyzed civilians and leaving behind fading remnants known as Torches. Yuuji is saved at the brink of destruction by a fierce, red-eyed girl with flaming hair wielding a giant katana. To his horror, the warrior informs Yuuji that he is already dead, having been reduced to a temporary Torch destined to vanish from memory. Refusing to succumb to despair, Yuuji names his protector Shana, forging an extraordinary alliance.

Produced by studio J.C.Staff and directed by Takashi Watanabe, *Shakugan no Shana* aired for twenty-four episodes between October 2005 and March 2006. Adapting Yashichiro Takahashi's acclaimed light novel series illustrated by Noizi Ito, the anime became a defining cornerstone of modern urban fantasy light novel adaptations. The series skyrocketed lead voice actress Rie Kugimiya to legendary tsundere stardom and featured iconic opening themes by Mami Kawada. Generating multiple television sequels, OVAs, and a movie, Shana's blazing battles set the aesthetic template for mid-2000s supernatural action anime.

A strong three stars, and I'm optimistic that the other seasons might improve on its performance. Add a star if you're a huge fan of action anime or if you aren't as picky about fantasy series as I am; knock one off if you've had your fill of shounen fighting-based anime or will flip if you see another character who even resembles a tsundere.
Diehard fans of the light novels or the first anime series might be more forgiving than I am, but my patience with this series was running on empty by the end. Here's hoping for a better third season.
