Story

Synopsis

High school teacher Nozomu Itoshiki is an incorrigible pessimist who plunges into theatrical despair over the most minor inconveniences, frequently declaring his desire to hang himself. His grim worldview is continually challenged by his student Kafuka Fuura, a pathologically optimistic girl who cheerfully reframes horrific catastrophes into whimsical fairy tales. Worse still, Itoshiki discovers that his entire classroom consists of eccentric social misfits, including an extreme shut-in, a violent stalker, an illegal immigrant, and a compulsive neat freak. Through satirical classroom debates, Itoshiki dissects the hypocrisies, anxieties, and absurdities of modern Japanese society.

⚠ Background — may contain spoilers

Adapted from Kouji Kumeta's biting satirical manga, *Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei* was animated by studio Shaft and directed by Akiyuki Shinbo, broadcasting in summer 2007. Spanning twelve television episodes, the anime was acclaimed for Shinbo's avant-garde visual direction, utilizing pop-art typography, live-action photographs, and surreal animation aesthetics to complement Kumeta's dark social satire. Voiced brilliantly by Hiroshi Kamiya, the series became a celebrated critical classic of late-2000s anime, spawning multiple sequel seasons and winning the prestigious Agency for Cultural Affairs Media Arts Festival prize.

THEM Anime Reviews

Tim Jones Zoku Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei 2008

It's getting a little tiring now, but there's still plenty of comedy to be had here.

Tim Jones 2007

A little darker than your typical Azumanga Daioh / Pani Poni Dash / Lucky Star type of humor, and more varied on its subject manner as well. Highly recommended for those who like comedic anime not simply about food or character traits.

THEM Anime Reviews

Tim Jones Zan Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei 2009

The third time is definitely not the charm for the Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei series. It does, however, result in exactly three stars, if only because traces of the series' once hilarious storytelling can be seen now and again.
