Story
Synopsis
In Tokyo's historic Asakusa district, three troubled middle school boys meet Keppi, a self-proclaimed prince of the mythical Kappa Kingdom. After Keppi forcibly extracts their shirikodama, Kazuki, Toi, and Enta physically transform into amphibious kappa creatures. To regain their human bodies, they must extract the shirikodama from zombies spawned by dark desires, transferring them into golden dishes. However, harvesting these spiritual orbs triggers a psychic leakage that exposes their most shameful, closely guarded personal secrets to one another. Overcoming deep isolation, the boys learn that authentic human connection requires bearing the pain of emotional vulnerability.
⚠ Background — may contain spoilers
MAPPA and Lapin Track co-produced this original eleven-episode anime series directed by Kunihiko Ikuhara, the celebrated auteur behind *Revolutionary Girl Utena* and *Mawaru Penguindrum*. Nobuyuki Takeuchi served as chief director, with original character designs created by Miggy. Airing in spring 2019 on Fuji TV's Noitamina programming block, the series blended surreal musical choreography, urban folklore, and pop art iconography. Beneath its flamboyant musical sequences and kappa transformations, the production tackled profound themes of digital alienation, family grief, and modern societal desire, earning strong critical admiration for its theatrical aesthetic and visual experimentation.
