Story

Synopsis

Set in early Meiji-era Tokyo, wandering pacifist swordsman Kenshin Himura and his companions Kaoru Kamiya, Sanosuke Sagara, and Yahiko Myojin cross paths with Shigure Takimi, a noble swordsman of the Yabunashi style who operates as an undercover samurai in the foreign settlement of Yokohama. Kenshin discovers that during the bloody Bakumatsu revolution, he personally slain Shigure's dearest sworn brother, Gentatsu Takatsuki. Unaware that Kenshin was the legendary Battousai who killed his friend, Shigure leads a desperate insurrection of impoverished samurai to overthrow the corrupt Meiji government.

⚠ Background — may contain spoilers
Corrupt imperial bureaucrat Kajiki manipulates Shigure's rebellion to seize political control, deploying Gatling guns and infantry against Shigure's men on the streets of Tokyo. When Gentatsu's sister Toki learns the truth, she begs Kenshin to stop the slaughter. Kenshin intercepts Shigure at the British Embassy, engaging him in an intense duel of philosophies. Kenshin overpowers Shigure with his reverse-blade sword, convincing him that violent coups dishonor the dead. When Kajiki's soldiers open fire on them, Shigure shields Kenshin with his body, dying peacefully in Toki's arms having finally found spiritual closure.
