Synopsis

Timid, introspective youth Sakon Tachibana comes from an elite lineage of traditional bunraku puppeteers. Shy around people, Sakon speaks openly through Ukon, a charismatic, sharp-tongued wooden puppet crafted during the Meiji era that he operates with seamless ventriloquism. Traveling across Japanese provinces to perform traditional puppet plays, Sakon and Ukon repeatedly encounter baffling murder mysteries, isolated mansion poisonings, and family estate feuds. Using his acute psychological observation alongside Ukon provocative deductions to unsettle nervous suspects, Sakon pieces together criminal motives, exposing the tragic human truths hidden behind deceptive crimes.

Background (may contain spoilers)

Airing twenty-six episodes on WOWOW from October 1999 to March 2000, *Sakon The Ventriloquist* was produced by Tokyo Movie Shinsha and directed by Hiroshi Matsuzono. Adapting the mystery manga series written by Masaru Sharaku and illustrated by *Death Note* artist Takeshi Obata, the anime stood out for its dark, gothic mystery tone and authentic theatrical puppetry culture. Accompanied by a moody, atmospheric musical score composed by Norihiro Tsuru, the series remains an intriguing classic among psychological mystery anime.
