Synopsis
Journeying westward through treacherous demon-infested badlands, the unorthodox Buddhist monk Genjyo Sanzo and his unruly companions, Son Goku, Sha Gojyo, and Cho Hakkai, come to the aid of a distressed young woman named Horan. Welcomed into an ornate hidden palace overseen by an eccentric master named Dogan, the weary travelers soon realize they have walked into an elaborate trap. Horan is an artificial human created through forbidden alchemy, and Dogan harbors a lethal personal grudge against Sanzo dating back to their monastic youth. Trapped within an enchanted domain, the four warriors must confront their deepest personal traumas to survive.

Directed by Hayato Date and produced by Studio Pierrot, *Saiyuki: Requiem* premiered in Japanese theaters in August 2001. Adapting Kazuya Minekura's popular modern fantasy manga reimagining of the Chinese literary classic *Journey to the West*, the movie served as the first theatrical feature for the franchise. The production was praised by anime enthusiasts for its atmospheric gothic art design, high-energy gun battles, and compelling exploration of Sanzo's guilt-ridden monastic upbringing. Accompanied by a hard-edged rock soundtrack and dynamic voice performances, the film remains a beloved highlight for longtime *Saiyuki* fans.
