Kusaka reveals that when both he and Hitsugaya manifested the identical ice zanpakuto Hyourinmaru during their academy days, the Central 46 ordered them to duel to the death, executing Kusaka. Resurrected by the Ouin's cosmic power, Kusaka intends to use the artifact to obliterate the Soul Society in revenge. Transforming into an immense winged ice dragon atop the Seireitei, Kusaka battles Ichigo and Hitsugaya. Toushiro activates his Bankai, Daiguren Hyourinmaru, to shatter Kusaka's ice form and strike him down, peacefully resolving their tragic shared past.
