Story

Synopsis

Centuries after human colonists crashed on the alien world of Terra II leaving only male survivors, society sustains its population through cloning and relies on emotionless female androids called Marionettes for labor. In the traditional Japanese-style city-state of Japon, impoverished working youth Otaru Mamiya accidentally awakens Lime, a dormant combat Marionette equipped with a miraculous Maiden Circuit that allows her to feel real human emotions. Soon joined by fellow emotional androids Cherry and Bloodberry, Otaru must protect his robotic companions from corrupt military despots who seek to weaponize their circuits.

Broadcasting twenty-five episodes on TV Tokyo from October 1996 to March 1997, *Saber Marionette J* was produced by Studio Junio and directed by Masami Shimoda. Based on the multimedia science fiction franchise created by Satoru Akahori and Tsukasa Kotobuki, the series was celebrated for its energetic blend of vibrant action, harem comedy, and heartfelt philosophical inquiries into android humanity. Featuring memorable voice work and music composed by PAROME, the anime remains an iconic staple of mid-1990s television anime.
