Story

Synopsis

Following a sudden tectonic cataclysm that shears the Kanagawa Prefecture off mainland Japan into an isolated island known as the Lost Ground, a small percentage of native infants develop Alter powers, enabling them to materialize supernatural armor from raw matter. In the lawless ruins, rebellious mercenary Kazuma uses his fist-augmenting Alter, Shell Bullet, to survive while clashing with the oppressive special police unit HOLD. When elite Alter user Ryuho captures Kazuma, an intense personal rivalry ignites, challenging class divisions, military tyranny, and the fundamental meaning of individual human freedom.

⚠ Background — may contain spoilers
Broadcasting twenty-six episodes on TV Tokyo from July to December 2001, *s-CRY-ed* was produced by Sunrise and directed by Goro Taniguchi, with scripts written by Yosuke Kuroda. Renowned for its blistering martial arts combat, unyielding ideological clashes, and kinetic animation direction, the anime became an enduring cult favorite among shonen action fans. Supported by an energetic, brass-heavy jazz-rock musical score composed by Kotaro Nakagawa, the production demonstrated Taniguchi signature talent for intense, morally complex character rivalries.
