Synopsis

Kijuro Takazawa is an elderly invalid cared for at home by Haruko, a young nursing student. The Ministry of Public Welfare picks him as the first patient for the Z-001, a computerized hospital bed with robotic features that is supposed to outdo any human nurse. Haruko does not trust a machine that cannot understand human feelings. Then the bed develops a personality of its own, breaks loose from the hospital with Takazawa inside, and the military is called in to stop it.

⚠ Background — may contain spoilers
Roujin Z (literally "Old Man Z") is a 1991 film written by Katsuhiro Otomo and directed by Hiroyuki Kitakubo. Otomo started out as director but withdrew before production began, and he kept the story, screenplay and mechanical design credits. Kitakubo had directed the A Tale of Two Robots segment of Robot Carnival and later made Blood: The Last Vampire. Hisashi Eguchi designed the characters and Bun Itakura composed the music. The film opened in Japan in September 1991 and won the Mainichi Film Award for animation that year. A manga adaptation called ZeD, with a story by Otomo and art by Tai Okada, ran in a magazine from March to December 1991.
