Story

Synopsis

Kenji Seki's days are simple. He walks his dog along the beach hoping to see classmate Kahori Harukawa surfing, then heads to school with his childhood friend Natsuki Suzuura. Then Ryoichi Kyogoku transfers in. Kyogoku says he is a psychic, and he has the charisma and popularity Kenji has always wanted. Kahori warms to him, Natsuki pulls away, and Kenji's easy routine starts to fall apart. What begins as a school romance slides into something stranger.

Psychic School Wars (Nerawareta Gakuen) is the first animated film made from Taku Mayumura's 1973 science fiction novel, a story Japan had already adapted several times for TV and live-action film, including Nobuhiko Obayashi's 1981 version starring Hiroko Yakushimaru. Sunrise produced this one, set in the coastal city of Kamakura. Ryosuke Nakamura directed it as his first feature, Mieko Hosoi handled character design, and Shusei Murai composed the music. Mayu Watanabe voices Natsuki and sings the theme, Sayonara no Hashi. The film premiered at Scotland Loves Animation in October 2012 and opened in Japan in November 2012.
