Following his parents' divorce, young Koyomi Takasaki chooses to live with his mother in an urban prefecture. In a world where brief unconscious shifts between parallel universes are scientifically proven everyday occurrences, Koyomi grows into an earnest, studious high school student focused on university entrance exams. His routine is upended when his eccentric classmate Kazune Takigawa approaches him, claiming that in the parallel world World 85, the two of them are passionately dating. Drawn to Kazune's intellect and charm, Koyomi begins a complex, lifelong romance that tests the boundaries of identity across multiple realities.
⚠ Background — may contain spoilers
Over decades of life, Koyomi and Kazune marry, raise children, and work as senior researchers studying parallel shift technology. Koyomi experiences quiet grief knowing that small shifts subtly alter the version of Kazune standing before him, but learns that love is an active choice rather than a single fixed destiny. In old age, Koyomi encounters an elderly woman at a pedestrian crossing, realizing that his parallel self in an alternate world sacrificed his own romantic happiness so this timeline's Koyomi and Kazune could live a full, joyful lifetime together.
