“Though slavishly formulaic and distinctly kid-oriented, this series about two starkly contrasting 8th graders who become a magical girl duo still looks good enough, and is distinguishable enough in its action components, to warrant at least a sampling by anime fans with diversified interests.”

Pretty Cure
Futari wa Precure · ふたりはプリキュア · 2004
Two contrasting schoolgirls gain martial magic powers to fight dark dimensions.
Synopsis
Nagisa Misumi is an athletic, outgoing lacrosse player, while Honoka Yukishiro is a quiet, bookish science club prodigy; despite attending the same middle school, they inhabit completely different social circles. Their ordinary lives collide when they encounter two magical sprite fairies who fell from the Garden of Light, a celestial realm devastated by evil Dotsuku Zone conquerors. Bestowed with magical transformation devices, the two girls must hold hands to transform into the emissaries of light, Cure Black and Cure White. Combining physical martial arts combat with radiant teamwork, they battle terrifying dark monsters.
Background (may contain spoilers)
Created by Izumi Todo and produced by Toei Animation, *Pretty Cure* debuted in February 2004 under the direction of Daisuke Nishio. Revolutionizing the traditional magical girl anime genre, the series replaced passive wand-waving with visceral, hard-hitting hand-to-hand kung fu combat influenced by Nishio's background directing *Dragon Ball Z*. The groundbreaking show became an immediate ratings juggernaut and commercial titan, launching the monumental Pretty Cure media franchise that has broadcast annual iterations and generated massive toy sales across Japan for over two decades.

“The first entry in the megafranchise that is Pretty Cure is fun and cute, but never really takes off like some of the later entries do. But it does play with the genre in some interesting ways.”
